Patch Picks: 5 Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (beginning Saturday!)

1. ST. PATRICK’S DAY WITH THE TEMPTATIONS

Where/When: Los Altos Grill. Thursday, at dusk. 

Why Go: Ring in St. Patrick’s Day at one of Los Altos’ favorite haunts, known for its great food and bar, and for hosting talented live music. For St. Patrick’s Day, the Grill will celebrate to the sounds of a revue by local band, The Temptations. 

Pricing: Free! (Except the beer, of course)

 

2. ST. PADDY’S PARTY

Where/When: Saratoga Village, on Big Basin Way at the intersection of Highway 9/Saratoga-Los Gatos Road. Saturday, 3-5 p.m.

Why Go: If you’re looking for a fun way to celebrate as a family, then the Saratoga Village's annual St. Paddy's Day Festival may be right up your alley. Take the whole family and enjoy Irish dancers, Celtic music, family activities, a hunt for lucky coins, contests with prizes and more. Many of the restaurants will serve traditional Irish meals. Drop by the booth in the parking lot of Bank of America to pick up your kit for the coin hunt and to enter several local drawings for prizes.

Where/When: , 13 S. San Antonio Road. Wednesday, 4 p.m. 

Why Go: What better way to ring in St. Patrick’s Day than with some lively Celtic music and Irish dancing? The Los Altos Library will play host to the Golden School of Irish Dancing on Wednesday, directed by Maureen Golden and accompanied by traditional Irish dancing songs and beautiful Irish costumes. A performance the whole family can enjoy! 

Pricing: Free!

 

4. A NIGHT OF BLUEGRASS AND GREEN BEER

Where/When: The Fox Theatre, 2223 Broadway St. in Redwood City. Thursday; doors open at 7:30 p.m., concert begins at 8:30. 

Why Go: Live bluegrass music and green beer. Need we say more? Well, let us add that the Windy Hill Bluegrass Band is one of the most celebrated bluegrass bands in all of California and that the Fox Theatre is one of the most attractive, intimate venues in all of the Bay Area. Pair that with green costumes and green beer in the spirit of St. Patty’s Day, and you can’t go wrong.

5. ST. PATRICK’S DAY AT AN AUTHENTIC IRISH PUB

Where/When: Stephen’s Green Irish Pub and Restaurant, 223 Castro St. in downtown Mountain View. All day on St. Patrick’s Day, which is Thursday.

Why Go: Celebrating St. Patty’s Day is always more fun at an authentic pub, and Stephen’s Green is about as authentic as they come. Drop by anytime, all day, on St. Patrick’s Day, and be greeted with the sights, sounds and smells of traditional Irish food, green beer and cocktails, and also live Celtic music at 5 p.m., followed by a DJ spinning tunes until the wee hours of the morning.

Other great Irish pubs: Molly Magee’s, also on Castro Street in downtown Mountain View; Katie Bloom’s, with locations in both San Jose and Campbell; and close cousins Britannia Arms, with several locations in Cupertino and San Jose; and the King’s Head Pub in Campbell.
