5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

Beginning this weekend, delve into five local events that celebrate Earth Day, and spread 'green' awareness, all the way to April 23.

This week, Patch Picks brings you five fun Earth Day events, because it's approaching so quickly that some start this weekend, ahead of the official April 22 Earth Day. So get out there, celebrate our home planet and learn a little bit about how you can give back to our Earth by adopting a few more green practices.

Where/When: , 1431 Waverly St., Palo Alto., Friday, April 15, 2-4 p.m.

Why Go: Bring the whole family and celebrate Earth Day at Palo Alto’s beautiful Gamble Gardens. Families with children of all ages are welcome to come and take part in fun Earth Day-inspired activities like a garden scavenger hunt and art projects, and juice and cookies will be served. Stop by anytime during the two-hour event.

2. LOS ALTOS HILLS EARTH DAY CELEBRATION

Where/When: , 27210 Altamont Rd., Los Altos Hills, Sunday, April 17, 1-4 p.m.

Why Go: The town of Los Altos Hills is ready to show you that Earth Day can be a party! Bring the whole family and enjoy a green shopping experience at the Farmer’s Market; get up close and personal with real leopards at the Presentation of the Wild Cats; shop a wide selection of booths bearing items by Los Altos Hills vendors like hats, seeds and wine glasses; and overall, just have a great time. Because of the exotic animals that will be on hand, please do not bring your dog. Remember to think green, and walk, ride your bike or take public transportation, and bring your reusable bags and water bottles!

3. MOUNTAIN VIEW REI’S EARTH DAY SERVICE PROJECT

Where/When: Palo Alto Baylands Natural Preserve, 1305 Middlefield Rd., Palo Alto, Saturday, April 23, 9 a.m. to noon.

Why Go: The Mountain View REI will have a truly green event next Saturday. In partnership with Save the Bay, REI will be out at the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve to help remove invasive plant species and clean up debris, helping to make a more healthy habitat for many species of shorebirds. No prior experience is necessary—Save the Bay will provide all the necessary equipment and instruction. Ages 5 and older are welcome; under 18 must have an adult with them. Dress in layers, and have sunscreen and a water bottle. Save the Bay will provide healthy snacks.

4. THE DOWNTOWN PALO ALTO CLEAN GREEN STREET SCENE

Where/When: Lytton Plaza, at the corner of University Avenue and Emerson Street, Friday, April 22, 4-8 p.m.

Why Go: Celebrate Earth Day in an impactful way—by viewing the world as it could be, if everyone on it committed to living sustainably. Take part in unique Earth Day events like a poetry slam, a recycled fashion show, an art walk featuring artwork by local school children displayed by downtown merchants, informational booths and demonstrations, test rides on electric bicycles, free giveaways and more. Many downtown businesses have teamed up to sponsor this event, including LiveGreene, a store that sells environmentally responsible merchandise and vintage clothing store Empire.

5. EARTH DAY ON THE BAY   

Where/When: , 500 Discovery Parkway, Redwood City, Saturday, April 16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why Go: There are two reasons to celebrate! It’s the Marine Science Institute’s 40th anniversary and, of course, it’s an event for Earth Day. Register for a Discovery EcoTour aboard MSI’s 90-foot boat on the San Francisco Bay. Meet marine animals in the Discovery Aquarium, and be on hand to watch the shark feedings. Lastly, have fun and explore three big tents of activities like arts and crafts and educational exhibits, and take a break to watch live entertainment like interactive theater, and musical and dance performances.
