Can You Give CPR To A Dog? Find Out Saturday

Is First Aid for pets the same as First Aid for humans? 'Pet Ready' teaches you what to do in an emergency.

 

Just how do you bandage a cat? Give CPR to a dog?

Could you do that for your beloved pet if there were an earthquake and you were on your own? Thought so.

That'a why 's veterninary technician students are hosting "Pet Ready." The Student Chapter of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians of Foothill (SCNAVTA) will show you Saturday, 1-4 p.m.

"It is a day for the public to come and learn what to do in the event of a
disaster," said Sandy Gregory, the instructor who advises the veterinary technician program, designed to support veterinarians.

Participants will learn how to make a basic set up of an emergency kit—and it doesn't mean buying Scooby-Do Band-Aids.

Then there is basic First Aid. 

"Animals are going to hurt their paws so the public will learn how to
bandage the foot and leg," she said. "Scared and injured animals will try to bite so there is a gauze muzzle technique they will learn." 

Fortunately, you can practice on non-biting animal mannequins Saturday.

On hand will be a vet and three registered veterinary technicians from Mid Peninsula Animal Hospital, and one doctor and one registered veterinarian from . They'll end the program with a demonstration by Peter Gross, search dog handler for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA. 

"In this area you never know when disaster can strike," Gregory said. "This day event will help you better prepare."

Admission is free. Most of the event will take place in Building 8500-8700 in room 8507, which is on the ground floor and the afternoon ends in Building 1500 for a demonstration.

Parking Lot 7 will be free to the first 50 participants. After that, be prepared to pay the usual $3 Foothill parking fee.
