Patch has rounded up a great list of events, all close by or special enough to take a short drive.

SATURDAY, DEC. 10

Medal Ball–Not Mirror Ball–Dance Showcase:  Studio will host its winter showcase. This is a full day of performances so that anyone can learn and experience ballroom dancing. There will also be social dancing. Lastly, award will be presented to current student in various categories. Hours: Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free.

Smuin Ballet brings sexy Christmas back: Want to spend a passionate weekend with a loved one? Take them to Smuin Ballet's performance at the . Catch their main stage show "The Christmas Ballet" jam packed with ballet but sexy dance pieces too. Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets: $65, $62, $52 adults; $23 students. TRAIN OF LIGHTS

Where/When: Departures from Niles Station, 37001 Mission Blvd. in Fremont, at 4:15 and 6:15 p.m.; and Sunol Depot, 6 Kilkare Road in Sunol, at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Thanksgiving through New Year's.  

What: A holiday tradition in the East Bay! Take a magical trip on the Train of Lights as the twinkling train winds through Niles Canyon for a 75-minute round-trip ride between Fremont and Sunol.

Price: Individual tickets are $25-40 each. For $600, you can rent out the entire caboose for a private event. A portion of proceeds benefits the Western Railway Heritage Museum.

Historic Holiday Trolleys, San Jose (all December)

VTA’s Historic Trolleys are making a comeback this holiday season. During December, the Candyland Express, a FREE service runs from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Fridays, and 1:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and operates between the San Jose Diridon and Civic Center Stations only.

Additionally, join VTA Saturday, December 17, at the Paseo de San Antonio and Santa Clara stations between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. for a holiday event featuring free giveaways, including treats and tickets to the San Jose Rep’s production of “A Christmas Carol."  Arrive early at the stations as limited tickets are available.

Christmas in the Park, San Jose: now to Jan. 1, 2011

The 32nd annual event features more than 60 animated and lighted displays, thousands of glittering lights and the gigantic Community Giving Tree. Visit with Santa and enjoy nightly entertainment. Christmas in the Park will be open until midnight every night . Bring your camera (or purchase one there) to  take holiday photos of your children with Santa! NOTE: On crowded evenings, the line may close early (approximately 30 minutes)  to allow Santa to leave on time.
