Pegueros is leaving to become Town Manager of Portola Valley, after a unanimous vote of that city's town council March 28. A resident of San Carlos, Pegueros begins his new job May 1.

He had several reports to the Los Altos Hills Town Council during his last meeting, including an update on the 2012-13 budget, which his young understudy, Finance Manager Richard Lee, will be charged with developing after Pegueros leaves.

During Pegueros' five years in Los Altos Hills, the final payment on the Town Hall was made, last year. Except for two small loans, he told the council, the town was debt-free.

"I think you’ve provided good leadership," said Mayor Larsen, who added how much valued "a steady hand" during some difficult times.

Allan Epstein, chairman of the town Finance and Investment Committee, rushed over  to say goodbye. He enjoyed working Pegueros, he said. "I have a great respect for him," he said.
