Get Out, Los Altos: Passport Day and Finding Edibles While Hiking

A short list of things to do, beginning this weekend, and through the week, as we get ready for the Thanksgiving holiday. Fit in some theater, taste some pinot noirs on Passport Day, hear a very special classical music program.

1.

Where /When: , 8 p.m.

Why Go: Under the magical Northern Lights, the residents of ALMOST, MAINE find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways as knees are bruised and hearts are broken. But the bruises heal and the hearts mend in the delightful midwinter night’s dream playing now through December 18.

Where/When: Vino Locale, 431 Kipling St., Palo Alto / Saturday, Nov 20, noon-5 p.m.

Why Go: Saturday is Passport Day for wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Without heading into the mountains, you can join Mary and Ed Muns of Muns Vineyard at to taste estate Pinot Noirs and their new 2009 Syrah from the vineyard on the 2,600-foot Loma Prieta ridge top.

Price: Tasting $10 without a Passport; Passports ($40) are available from the Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers Association or at Vino Locale, which can be used again for each of the quarterly Passport events.

Where/When: / Sunday, 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Why Go: Hear this full program produced for the Nov. 13 Festival of New American Music, including Subterranean River by celebrated California composer Stephen Blumberg. Blumberg has created this captivating piece especially for the California Youth Symphony. The program also includes Cello Concerto by William Walton, with rising young star Eunice Kim as soloist. Eunice won the 2011 California Youth Symphony Young Artist Competition at Stanford University last spring. The Concerto is one of Walton's most luxuriant and romantic scores, eloquently poetic. Two additional pieces are: Aaron Copland's famous Billy the Kid Ballet Suite, which draws on American Western themes and combines them with Copland's brilliant orchestration; and Leonard Bernstein's stunning Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront. 

Price: $10 to $30

 

4. Wild Cat Adventure

Where/When: Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills / Sunday, Nov. 20, 2 p.m.

Why Go: See wild cats live and learn interesting facts about these incredible animals at a presentation by the Wild Cat Education and Conservation Fund. For more information, contact 707-874-3176.

Price: $10 adults, $5 children under 12.

Where/When: & Preserve, / Tuesday, Nov. 22, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Why Go: Join docents Marilyn and Bill Bauriedel, and Tommi and Strether Smith on this hike to discover a few staple items on this land that were harvested for food by Native Americans and early European settlers. You won’t be able to consume any edible discoveries, but you are welcome to take photos and keep a log. If you are lucky, you might even see a wild turkey or two. Bring a lunch. This walk will be at a moderate pace and cover about 5 miles along the Mora, Wildcat Loop, and Upper Wildcat Canyon Trails. Where to meet: Meet at the Rancho San Antonio Preserve/County Park main parking lot. From I-280, take Foothill Boulevard south and turn right almost immediately onto Cristo Rey Drive. Continue about 1 mile, turn left into the Preserve/County Park. Use the farthest parking lot to the right and meet near the restroom at the bottom of the hill.
