Valorie Cook Carpenter Joins Palo Alto's Junar

Carpenter, in her second term on the Los Altos City Council, will be vice president of marketing for the company that is a cloud-based platform for open data initiatives.

Junar, a cloud-based open data platform, has announced that Valorie Cook Carpenter has joined the Palo Alto company as Vice President of Marketing, reporting directly to CEO and Co-founder Diego May.

“I’m delighted to welcome Val to the Junar team,” stated Diego May, CEO and co-founder of Junar, on July 10.

“Her experience as both a seasoned Silicon Valley marketing executive and current city councilwoman gives her unique insights that will benefit Junar in many ways.”

May founded the company with Chief Technology Officer Javier Pájaro, his classmate from Argentina, and the name, Junar ("hoo-NAHR"), is derived from a Buenos Aires-based slang term for "to view and to know." 

Junar says it is the engine behind open data initiatives, and has been adopted by cities such as Palo Alto, Cupertino and Las Vegas, information on the company website says.

“I’m impressed with the technology Junar has developed to support progressive governments striving for ever-greater transparency to their constituents,” said Val Carpenter, Vice President of Marketing for Junar.  “I’m eager to build on the company’s momentum and help take it to the next level of success.”

Carpenter is in her second term on the Los Altos City Council and has twice served as the Mayor of Los Altos.  A native of Chicago, she began her marketing career in brand management with Procter & Gamble following her graduation from Indiana University with a B.S. in Business with Honors in Marketing. After earning her MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Carpenter transitioned from consumer packaged goods to high tech, ultimately serving as Vice President of Marketing for publicly-held Broderbund Software, Apple’s Claris subsidiary, and Caere Corporation, as well as two venture-funded startups. 

Carpenter was a YWCA of Silicon Valley Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) honoree in 2000, and has served on the Boards of Directors of six nonprofit organizations.  Since being elected in 2005, she has taught business, management and marketing classes at Menlo College in Atherton and Mission College in Santa Clara.
