Los Altos Safeway: Demolition To Begin 'Immediately'

Demolition actually begins Saturday, when one lane will be closed off next to the store, but you can't blame Safeway officials for being happy that final approval got signed off Thursday.

Last week it was all hard hats and wine flutes for the ceremonial "first wallop" of the downtown Los Altos Safeway building.

There was just one hang-up—demolition couldn't actually begin because the approval process had not been completed in time for the big bash.

Now, it can. The city signed off on the demolition, said Erica Ray, public information coordinator for the city.

"We are beginning demolition immediately and construction schedule is still on target with a spring opening next year," wrote Wendy Gutshall, manager of public and governmental affairs at Safeway, in response to Patch's query.

Actually, demolition will begin Saturday, Ray said. That was the soonest it could coordinate the closure of one lane on First Street as a precautionary measure while the front of the store is being torn down.

The entire demolition process is expected to take two weeks, Phillips said. The lane closure on First Street will only be on one day, and motorists will have through access on the second lane.
