Science and Nature Camp: A Last Minute Addition at Discount

Pet a goat or look for a ghost, it's all part of a newly added Cupertino Parks and Rec youth summer camp for June 27-July 1.

Looking for a summer camp that isn't full? Neighboring Cupertino just added one— and at discount—for youths 5-10.

The Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department announced last week that it added a new science and nature camp to its already full line-up of youth camps, and it's being offered at a discounted rate.

"We already have a science camp and a nature camp and this is a combination of both," says Dave Jahns, recreation coordinator. "This is the best of both worlds."

The camp is geared with the elements of science and nature, but still has art and games.

"We're still doing crafts, they'll just all have science themes to them," Jahns says. "We're teaching them a little bit about science, but in a fun way."

Games played during the day and crafts created will relate back to the science lessons, he says.

For children ages 5 to 10, the camp which runs from June 27 to July 1, includes science experiments, hikes, games and crafts, as well as animal encounters and an all-day field trip to the U.S.S. Hornet naval ship.

The camp is held at where children will visit the nature museum and nature preserve, as well as visit the critters at the 4H Club located on the grounds.

The U.S.S. Hornet is an aircraft carrier moored in Alameda rich in wartime history and, according to local psychics and paranormal investigators, is teeming with ghosts who came to save the ship from being turned in to scrap metal.

According to psychic Annette Martin, the ship holds an important spot in history and the ghosts came to the ship to help preserve it--they knew their presence on the ship would draw attention to it, and its place in history, which includes being part of the recovery of Apollo 11.  It must have worked because instead of being scrapped, the ship is a 4,000 ton museum and a national historic landmark.

Because the camp is a last-minute addition it is discounted at $150 for Cupertino residents, and $180 for non-residents. It is not listed in the summer camp brochure so be sure to note the registration code which is 47160. Registration can be done by calling the Parks and Recreation Department at 408-777-3120, or online at www.reg4rec.org.
