Patch Picks: Top Halloween Events for Kids

Whether educational or just fun opportunities to parade in costumed finery, a full schedule of Halloween events take place for big and little kids, free or for fee, beginning Friday, and on through Monday.

Los Altos Patch took the opportunity to list some fun activities for the kids this Halloween weekend. The actual day, of course, is Monday, but there are events that are close at hand, and some a little farther away that offer a slight twist on the All Hallow's Eve fun.

Where/When: Santa Rita School, 700 Los Altos Avenue, Los Altos / Oct. 28, 3-8 p.m.

Why Go: This PTA fundraiser has been around longer than most parents have been alive, so expect some nostalgia. All the kids' favorite carnival rides are back, they say. Spooky prizes, spooky cakes, all kinds of goodies come your child's way with games, and the cake walk. Come in costume and enter the costume contest. Local sponsors include the Sweet Shop and Rick's Cafe.

2.  Slither & Squeak


Where/When: CuriOdyssey, 1651 Coyote Point Drive, San Mateo, CA 94401/ 6-8pm

Why Go: Where else can you enjoy Halloween fun with a scientific bent? Kids are encouraged to wear their costumes as they discover the science behind the spooky things you see at Halloween. Museum educators will reveal haunted house tricks of the trade and reveal to visitors how those creepy, scary things happen. Meet CuriOdyssey’s nocturnal animals, experiment hands-on with spooky science, and take part in science-inspired trick-or-treating! Bring flashlights to explore. Food will be available to purchase from local food trucks, including Toasty Melts and Treatbot.

Price: CuriOdyssey Members: Adults - $10; Ages 2-17 - $5; Under 2 - Free;       Non-members: Adults - $15; Ages 2-17 - $10; Under 2 - Free

 

SATURDAY

3. Trick or Treat - Halloween Family Fun

Where/When: , Saturday, Oct. 29, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Dress up, and go trick-or-treating along Rancho's wide walkways and easy-going atmosphere. Shopkeepers have treats and each child in costume will receive a mini-pumpkin from the Farmers Market.

Price: Free

 

4. Halloween at El Camino YMCA

El Camino YMCA, 2400 Grant Road, Mountain View, 94040 / 12 to 2 pm

Why Go: Activities include face painting, games and prizes, healthy snacks, arts and crafts, tricks and treats, costume parade.

Price: Free to the public

 

5. Spooky Times at Deer Halloween Farm

Where/When: Deer Hollow Farm, Open Space Preserve, Los Altos / 10:00 am to 3:00 pm

Why Go: Is it spookier down on the farm? Find out. Here's a chance to come in costume and explore haunted barns, try your hand at children’s activities and crafts and of course, meet the sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, pigs and Luna the cow. (650) 903-6430; deerhollowfarm@mountainview.gov

SUNDAY

6. Haunt The Hollow

Where/When: Happy Hollow Zoo, 1300 Senter Road
San Jose, CA 95112, Oct. 30, 1-4 p.m.

Why Go: Its a nice, easy drive on an early Sunday afternoon to the 15th Annual Haunt the Hollow event. Kelly Park means safe fun and lots of it, with trick-or-treat stations throughout the zoo. If you're a member, it's a deal and if you're not, it's a good time to check out the park, which includes a park, zoo, puppet shows and rides. The park is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so you can go early and make a day of it before the trick-or-treating begins.

Price: $3 Happy Hollow Members; $9 All Reciprocal Members; $12 Non-Members / General Admission

 

MONDAY

7. Halloween Spooktacular

Where/When: Downtown Los Altos, Oct. 31, 12 noon to 4 p.m.

Why Go: This Trick-Or-Treating event is being held for children at participating stores in downtown Los Altos. Face painting, balloon art, juggling by Owen Baker Flynn, spooky spider craft by Green Bean Kidz, Halloween crafts, and much more!
