Grab & Go Kids Planner

Your kids can cook for Lunar New Year and learn to make Valentine treats, or you can see a family movie at the library or go to a nearby town to see a kid's play.

This is our new, weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children and yes, even teens! The idea is to offer you suggestions about things you can do as a family!

Each week, we'll give you the info on five of the best family activities or events for the week.

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

• CHINESE NEW YEAR KIDS COOKING CLASS

Where/When: Whole Foods Market, Los Altos, 4800 El Camino Real, Saturday, 3-5 p.m. 

Why Go: Well, we have to admit that for this one, you won't go. Only your children will go to the . But won't it be worth the wait, after the "Culinary Dude" has taught your kid how to whip up a fantastic Lunar New Year Feast.

• DARE 2B DIGITAL

Where/When: , 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd., Saturday, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. 

Why Go: Dare 2B Digital: A Conference on Careers for Young Women is  designed to provide middle-school and high-school girls with a better understanding of exciting and creative careers in technology.

Pricing: $35 for young women, $45 for parents

  • FERDINAND THE BULL 

Where/When: Palo Alto Children's Theater, 1305 Middlefield Rd., Palo Alto. Three shows Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2, 4:30 and 7 p.m.

Why Go: The story of Ferdinand the Bull is irrestible. This new musical, based on the classic story by Munro Leaf, tells the tale of Ferdy, an easygoing, flower-loving kind of bull, who meets the unhappy Danilo, a boy torn between his own dream and his father's desires for him to be a bullfighter. 

 Pricing: $8-$12

  • AFTERNOON FAMILY MOVIE AT THE LIBRARY 

Where/When: , 13 S. San Antonio Rd., Saturday, 2-4 p.m. 

Why go: Watch Despicable Me with your child and other families in a pleasant, inviting setting. Call the library at 650-948-7683 for more information.

• VALENTINE'S DAY GIFT MAKING 

Where/When:  Los Altos, 4800 El Camino Real, Sunday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. 

Why go: Can  you resist? Kids and parents. Kids will be able to make a jar of bath salts, valentines and decorate cookies.
