Get Out: A Lizard Western, Some Stargazing and Ol' Fashioned County Fair

The first weekend in August is a wonderful time to savor the best weekend activities for Los Altos and surrounding cities.

It’s Friday, and if you have no idea what you’ll do for the weekend, Patch is coming to the rescue.

1. Friday Night Movies in Downtown Los Altos: 'Rango'

Where / When: Main and Third streets, Los Altos / Streets "open" at 6 p.m. to stake your seating space; movie at 8:30 p.m.

Why Go: Really, we've written way too much about this little great event, but it's the first night, and it's a balmy night to head into the village to enjoy some community movie-watching. Pass the popcorn to the family next to you and do some much-needed shopping while you're waiting for the movie to start. Our merchants will love you.

2. Stargazing at Hidden Villa

Where/When: Hidden Villa, Dana Center, 26870 Moody Rd, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022  / Saturday, Aug. 6, 8:00 - 11:00pm

Why Go: This one is a a good one for everyone in the family. Ever wonder if what you see up there is a real constellation? Spend a summer night under the stars with the San Mateo Astronomical Society. Arrive at the Dana Center at 8 pm for a presentation by the ever-popular Dave, The AstroWizard. Then around 9 pm, you get to do it yourself—view the sky through massive telescopes. Observe constellations, star clusters, galaxies and more. Bring a flashlight and blanket or lawn chair and enjoy Hidden Villa's "off-the-grid, county night sky."

3. Music@Menlo Summer Concerts

Where/When: St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 600 Colorado Ave., Palo Alto, Sunday, 4 p.m.

Why go: This summer's Music@Menlo concert series features the genius of Brahms with multiple concerts, including this Sunday's String Quartet. Check out the Music@Menlo website for a full calendar of events.

Where/When: 344 Tully Rd, San Jose, CA 95111 (Santa Clara County Fairgrounds), Thursday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Why go: See live performances, a livestock auction, a pet parade and, of course, go on the rides! Check out the schedule on their website. Friday is Kids Day, which means the first 500 kids aged 11 and under who come through the gates on Kid's Day, get their choice of a free T-shirt or hat.

Price: Free admission, free parking Thursday & Friday

5. Wine Tasting @ Artisan Wine Depot

Where/When: Artisan Wine Depot, 400A Villa St., Mountain View, Friday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Why go: Check out the Escarpment Vineyards tasting at this walk-around tasting event, made by Legend of Martinborough & Pinor Noir Godfather Larry McKenna.
