Time Magazine Features Jose Antonio Vargas

The journalist-turned-immigration advocate's 'Define American' organization wants to lead conversation about the status of the undocumented, particularly children.

Almost a year ago, Pulitzer Prize winner and Mountain View High School graduate Jose Antonio Vargas made headlines with cover story interview in revealing he had lived in the United States as an undocumented immigrant since the age of 12.

This week, he along with other undocumented youths, are the cover of Time Magazine.

Since his "coming out," the former Mountain View resident has travelled around the country with the non-profit organization Define American—that he helped start—to speak at forums, universities and media outlets in support of the DREAM Act, legislation which creates a path to citizenship for undocumented children living in the U.S.

Today, the cover of TIME Magazine features the culmination of a yearlong journey. It is a reflection on what I’ve experienced traveling across the United States, after “coming out” publicly as an undocumented immigrant a year ago this month.

I reflect on the tough questions I’ve been asked and tell the stories of some of the toughest young people I’ve ever known: young DREAMers who are American through and through --  whose courage and determination has now been documented by TIME filmmakers.

In the year since my essay went viral, at least 2,000 undocumented Americans -- and we are, at heart, Americans -- have personally contacted me and outed themselves. Their stories flooded in at public events and in late-night Facebook messages.
