Simitian to Hold 'Friend-Raiser,' Honor Local Figures Sunday

The campaign event will take place in Mountain View. Among those involved and being honored are Mountain View City Councilwoman Margaret Abe-Koga, and Becky Morgan and Gerry Steinberg of Los Altos Hills.

State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) will hold a "Friend-Raiser" event in Mountain View Sunday to both kick off his campaign for the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, and to honor local women who have served as District Five supervisors in the past. The event is free, and open to all "friends of Simitian" who wish to support his campaign. "After 12 years in the Legislature, the Board of Supervisors represents a great opportunity to get back to the satisfaction of getting the job done here at home," said Simitian. "It's challenging and important work - health care, welfare, public safety, regional land use, and more." The four women to be honored at the event are current District Five Supervisor Liz Kniss, and former District …

Republicans Tell Californians: You Can Elect A Conservative

GOP members tell Californians not to give up hope.

Tim Pawlenty, former governor of Minnesota and presidential hopeful, told California Republicans that it is possible to elect a conservative candidate in a state often deemed too liberal and overlooked by most campaigners. Pawlenty spoke to about 250 supporters Saturday night at the California Republican Convention, about half the number that attended Newt Gingrich’s speech earlier in the day.  “If I can be a conservative governor in Minnesota, we can do it anywhere,” he said, noting that Minnesota has elected liberal politicians such as Al Franken and Walter Mondale. He told Californians that they live in the most entrepreneurial and innovative state in the country, and they must fight to keep it that way, arguing that only lower taxes …

Gingrich Blames Obama For High Gas Prices

Keynote speaker of GOP California Convention pounced on President Obama during afternoon address.

Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich blamed the Obama Administration for the recent spike in oil prices and promised supporters at the California Republican Convention today that he would sign an executive order if elected to approve the Keystone XL pipeline project. With dozens of supporters holding “$2.50 a gallon” signs behind him during his speech at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport Hotel Saturday, Gingrich admonished what he called the Obama Administration’s systemic failure in energy policy, and accused it of deliberately raising gas prices. “When you fill up your tank, you can think of gas prices as the Obama tax,” he said. The national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.67 as of today, according to AAA. Gingrich …

Republican Party Strives to Engage Voters

The California GOP Convention officially kicked off Friday afternoon in Burlingame with a message: The Republican Party has a mission to engage voters by branding candidates and with regards to President Obama say 'Enough is enough.'

The California Republican Convention kicked off this afternoon with party leaders adamant about finding revolutionary ways to brand their candidates and further engage voters. Inside the Burlingame Hyatt, a rousing speech from the state’s party Co-Chair Sharon Day during the executive luncheon was followed by a discussion of digital voting methods that could both change the way Republicans interact with their voters and how they market their candidates. “What we have to do together is make sure Barack Obama is a one-term president,” said Day to emphatic applause from the more than 80 Republicans who gathered inside the dining room. “We have to take back control of the Senate, and we have to send more congressman to Washington, D.C. to …

Wonderful event - so glad to see other American-Mexicans, American-Asians, American-Africans of both sexes attend. The best part is that Republicans come in all shapes and sizes in all different colors, but the thing that we have in common is that we are American first.   more ›

Kris Wang officially announced Friday her candidacy for a seat on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Wang, who termed out as Cupertino City Councilmember, had filed an intent to run but until now was reluctant to declare a formal run saying she was still in the “exploration” phase. Wang’s announcement follows Cupertino Councilman Barry Chang’s recent kickoff celebration at Hong Fu Restaurant. The two Cupertino residents challenge …

Abe-Koga Ends Run for Supe; Endorses Simitian

Three months after launching campaign, the Mountain View Councilwoman decides to support her 'good friend.'

Margaret Abe-Koga announced today that she no longer seeks to replace County Supervisor Liz Kniss, who terms out this year, but that instead supports State Senator Joseph Simitian's run for Supervisor. "As I said when I announced my candidacy, this job is about making local government work for everyone in the county so no one falls through the cracks," Abe-Koga said in a letter to supporters. "I know Joe is dedicated to that proposition, and I look forward to supporting him in that work." The two-term Mountain View councilwoman and former mayor, Abe-Koga threw her hat in the race for supervisor to represent Santa Clara County's District 5 on Sept. 21, 2011, two months before Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) did so. But after "a great deal of …

Answering David. If you measure it by diplomas, Simitian must indeed be a bright guy, so during his time in Sacramento he could have tackled our State's fiscal mess. Instead, he chose to play with boondoggle trains and write nanny bills. We need politicians who will handle the tough stuff. Not Joe.   more ›

Abe-Koga Announces Run for County Supervisor

The two-term Mountain View City councilwoman and former mayor hopes to succeed the retiring Liz Kniss.

Starting 2012, Mountain View Councilwoman Margaret Abe-Koga hopes to represent several South Bay cities at the county level. Abe-Koga announced Wednesday that she plans to run for Santa Clara County District 5, the seat now held by retiring Supervisor Liz Kniss. "I am running for supervisor, because I believe in local government, and I have seen it work," Abe-Koga said in an email. "My experience serving on the Mountain View City Council has shown me that local government can produce tangible results for our families, our schools and our community. As your supervisor, I want to focus on making local government work on the county level." County supervisors administer health, education and criminal justice programs as agents of the state, …
