The Santa Clara County Sheriff investigated the chopping of three oak trees along Elena Road in Los Altos Hills.

Los Altos Hills Mayor Rich Larsen had only one word for it. "Shame."

At least three oak trees were crudely hacked at about waist height along Elena Road more than a week ago. City Manager Carl Cahill, in an email to City Council members accompanied by these pictures, said there were no witnesses to the Sheriff's had taken a report.

Town maintenance supervisor Jacob Asfour said he had installed a camera after the fact, but had not picked up any leads. Both the mayor and Asfour said they believe it was a case of vandalism. The Santa Clara County Sheriff is investigating.

I wonder how difficult it might be to do this. Given the trees that have been affected by sudden oak death syndrome, it's a shame to have trees willfully destroyed in this manner.
