Just Opened: Yes, 359 State Street IS the Name

A bike shop opens in Los Altos without a shred of Lycra, aimed at everyday riding, from home to work to errands.

The mystery store on State Street, all white walls, lots of black and grey, and the words, "Work" "Ride" "Play" revealed itself Thursday afternoon at its ribbon-cutting ceremony.

It's a bike store.

But not your usual Los Altos bike store, though like the others in town, is conveniently located just off Foothill Expressway.

In San Francisco, you'd get it immediately. In Los Altos, full of weekend riders training on long rides, encased in form-fitting Lycra, it was a bit of headscratcher. It looked like bike store, but ... different.

It's meant for people who ride every day to get to work and run errands—and need to look like normal people when they arrive, said owner Jeff Selzer. Or better than normal. Cool. There are more wool felt hats on display than helmets, more witty T-shirts and commuter wear than and energy bars and logo'd Lycra. Actually, we didn't really see any energy bars or Lycra.

"Most people think about bikes as recreational equipment, weekend toys," said Selzer, who runs for the family that also owns at Loyola Corners. Not here. There's no bike repair shop here; he'll send them to the other two repair shops. But there are educational efforts and resources.

Selzer said he's trying to help foster a little community. To that end, a good part of the cavernous space in there is aimed at allowing groups bring in speakers. Monday, GreenTown Los Altos is bringing in April Economides, a consultant from southern California to talk about how Long Beach implemented an innovative bike-friendly business district and to make the .
